U.S. Transportation Secretary Ray LaHood Friday announced 42 new designations
to the America's Byways® collection, including five All-American
Roads and 37 National Scenic Byways (including Alabama's Coastal Connection) in 26 states. This increases the
number of America's Byways® to 151.
"By enriching the National
Scenic Byways program with their own unique historical or aesthetic quality, these
new additions help our national road system tell our country's story," said
Secretary LaHood. "These routes continue to offer Americans exciting new opportunities
to explore the nation - whether they travel close to home or across the country."
Alabama's Coastal Connection traverses southern Mobile and Baldwin Counties
and was designated a state scenic byway in 2004. A large group from throughout the byway route,
representing business, attractions and municipalities have been working as a Byway Advocacy Group.
"The
Dauphin Island Park and Beach Board is extremely pleased with the announcement
that Alabama's Coastal Connection is now officially recognized as a National Scenic
Byway!" said Michael Henderson, executive director of the Parks and Beach Board
and member of the Byway Advocacy Group. "This recognition will generate additional
tourism income for communities the length of the byway while providing visitors
an opportunity to experience the unique natural, cultural and recreational resources
it offers. Perhaps as important," he continued, "the national designation serves
to remind residents of how fortunate we are and the importance of protecting these resources for future generations."
Since its
2004 state designation, a Corridor Management Plan has been completed and
the implementation stage is just beginning. "This designation is a great honor
and is definitely validation for the folks who've been working on this project
for years," said Byway Coordinator Colette Boehm. "We are all excited about
the designation. It will be a great asset in getting the word out
about the amazing resources and attractions we have along Alabama's Gulf Coast."
"Those of us who have been working on getting scenic byways
designated in Alabama are excited that the first byway we designated has now
