Black Warrior River

The Black Branch Watershed drains approximately 3.3 square miles. Locally, the creek is located in Coal Valley which has a long history of underground coal mining. Corona Coal Company mined this area through 1920, followed by Debardeleben Coal Company through 1945. Documented studies show that the abandoned mines in the Black Branch watershed continue to discharge highly acidic polluted water into Black Branch and Cane Creek drainage systems. Black Branch is listed on the State’s 2002 303(d) list of Impaired Waters for metals, pH, other habitat alteration, and siltation. On March 8, 2007, the Mining and Reclamation Division and the Black Warrior Clean Water Partnership hosted a field tour of the Black Branch/Cane Creek Acid Mine Drainage Remediation Site. Larry Barwick of the ADIR's Abandoned Mine Lands Program led the tour of the Black Branch area of the Cane Creek AMD remediation project. Sixteen individuals participated in the tour which showcased the progress of the Black Branch AMD remediation project. Attendees included representatives from the Environmental Protection Agency, ADEM, US Army Corps of Engineers, USDA-NRCS, local industry, landowners, and environmental groups. Federal and state agencies, as well as local persons interested in environmental issues, participated in a tour of the Black Branch remediation project.
