Sunday, Sept. 10. Passive Solar Design Can Save Money! This author presentation will be from 2 p.m. to 4 p.m. on Sunday, September 10 at the Oneonta Public Library. Alabama architect Debra Rucker Coleman will discuss passive solar design, green building principles, and conservation techniques as described in her book, The Sun-Inspired House – House Designs Warmed and Brightened by the Sun. During an author presentation event co-sponsored by the Oneonta Public Library and the Blount County Literacy Council, Debra Rucker Coleman will introduce these proven design concepts and explain their benefits in terms of occupant comfort, occupant health, cost savings, and positive environmental impact. Come see examples that show the beauty and variety of these houses. By learning the steps of designing a sun tempered or passive solar home, as well as the resources needed for doing so, attenders at this event will leave ready to begin the process of ensuring that their new home is more comfortable, healthy, cost saving, and friendly to the environment. It is free and open to the public. Proceeds from book sales and donations collected will benefit the Library and the Blount County Literacy Council. October 14. Thorsby Swedish Fest. Yep! That's right! Thorsby was founded by Swedes in the late 1800's and was established as a Scandinavian Colony in the South. This will be our 18th year celebrating that heritage with a festival. There will be a parade @ 9:00 am with entertainment, arts & crafts, food vendors and a motorcycle show in the Richard H. Wood Memorial Park. The Norwegian Lutheran Church will be open for browsers to look in the museum and interested individuals may purchase a 2006 program book at the information table and follow a self-guided motor tour of the historical sites, which include Scandinavian homes, cemetery and other interesting points of history. The festivities will wind down about 2:00 pm that afternoon. Come out and enjoy our unique heritage.
Saturday, October 14. Alabama Historical Association will be visiting Marion, AL. Opening events will take place at Judson College beginning at 9:30 AM. There will be several homes in the area on tour, as well as the Lincoln School and the Alabama Women's Hall of Fame at Judson College. The Women Entrepreneurs and downtown businesses will be having their annual sidewalk sale on the square to coincide with the AHA visit. vburnes@judson.edu

Friday, November 24. Over 1,000,000 lights will transform Arab’s City Park into a magical Christmas wonderland. Arab’s 12th Annual Christmas in the Park event will begin on Friday, November 24, 2006, with a lighting ceremony at 6:00 p.m. Live entertainment, featuring Christmas music, will begin immediately following the lighting ceremony, and continue each Friday evening through December 23, 2006. The lights will be on each evening through December 31, 2006. For a truly inspiring Christmas experience, you won’t want to miss this event! Special Christmas events and decorations are also planned for the Historic Complex, which is located adjacent to the park. Historic buildings, including a Church, School, General Store, and an operational gristmill, have been relocated to the site and restored to their original state. In addition, a museum is located in the complex. This museum is divided into sections with each depicting an historic building in Arab, such as Arab’s first hotel, barbershop, and drug store. A large collection of historic memorabilia is also on display in the museum. There is no admission fee for this event, however, donations are always welcome.
