Firefighter Combat Challenge comes to Alabama for the first time

The Firefighter Combat Challenge (FCC) is set to make its first appearance in the state of Alabama when firefighters from across the southeastern United States travel to Albertville for what is referred to as “the toughest two minutes in sports.” Set for May 8 from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. at the Albertville Recreation Center, firefighters from municipal fire departments race head-to-head as they simulate the physical demands of real-life firefighting. The obstacle course includes climbing a 5-story tower, hoisting, chopping, dragging hose, and rescuing a life-sized, 175 lb. “victim.” The winner will receive a fire hydrant donated by the Mueller Company, a leader in the manufacturing of fire hydrants. After the Albertville plant produced its one-millionth hydrant in 1989, Albertville was declared the “Hydrant Capital of the World.” The event also includes a Kid’s Firefighter Challenge, a scaled down version of the real FCC, complete with miniature bunker gear, miniature fire hoses, and inflatable obstacles, as well as an informational display area provided by the Alabama Fire College. The FCC was established to promote and showcase the talents, skills and athleticism of America’s firefighter heroes in an exciting and entertaining sports competition that travels to approximately twenty-five locations throughout the country every year. Simulating many of the essential skills of firefighting – climbing a five story tower in full gear, dragging and hoisting fire hose, racing around obstacles, simulating forcible entry, etc. – the FCC motivates, identifies and celebrates America’s “best of the best” firefighters.
