Project for Public Spaces (PPS) has identified ten qualities that
contribute to the success of great streets. Streets account for as much
as a third of the land in a city, and historically, they served as
public spaces for social and economic exchanges. Great streets
incorporate the elements described in the list below.
- Attractions & Destinations
- Identity & Image
- Active Edge Uses
- Seasonal Strategies
- Diverse User Groups
- Traffic, Transit & the Pedestrian
- Blending of Uses and Modes
- Protects Neighborhoods
Each quality is described in detail at the
resource link below. PPS offers many more documents on great streets —
and great places — on its website at www.pps.org/.
