Watch as hundreds of professional and amateur bicycle racers zoom
around the 0.6-mile downtown race course in NASCAR fashion at speeds
reaching 40 mph! Dine outdoors at the Red Diamond Restaurant Tour,
featuring more than 15 eateries. Also children’s races, artists’ market
and live music.
King Kat Invitational
Sheffield; May 3
Anglers converge on Pickwick and Wilson Lake, also known as the Catfish Capital of the World. Weigh-in, 3 p.m.
Alabama Coastal Triathlon
Gulf Shores; May 3
The triathlon consists of a 1,000-yard swim in the Gulf of Mexico, a
20-mile bike ride down the main beach road in Orange Beach and through
the Gulf State Park in Gulf Shores and finishes with a five-mile run.
George Washington Carver Arts & Crafts Festival
Tuskegee; May 10
The Carver Festival, co-sponsored by the Tuskegee Area Chamber of
Commerce, is a multi-faceted event celebrating the life and works of
Dr. George Washington Carver. Held annually in downtown Tuskegee on the
City Square and North Main Street the Saturday prior to Mother’s Day.
Event features wholesome family fun, arts, crafts, vendors, rides, farm
exhibits, talent displays, entertainment and door prizes.
McDonalds’s Big Bass Splash
Scottboro; May 17-18
Amateur-only fishing tournament with a guaranteed payout of $150,000.
Featuring a daily block party, a young anglers fishing contest and
hourly prizes awarded.
NJCAA Division I Golf Championship
Huntsville; May 17-24
This year and for the next two years, Huntsville will be the site of
this prestigious golfing event. The tournament is the coordinating
effort of Central Alabama Community College, Wallace State Community
College of Hanceville, the Huntsville Sports Organization and others.
Jesse Owens Memorial Run
Moulton; May 17
Competition among 1,000 runners includes 10k, two-mile and one-mile
runs in honor and memory of Lawrence County native Jesse Owens.
Alabama Jubilee Hot Air Balloon Classic
Decatur; May 24-25
One of the largest free balloon festivals in the Southeast, featuring
balloon races, glows, kite flying, car show, arts and crafts, musical
entertainment, children’s area and a food court.
Rickwood Classic Baseball Game
Birmingham; May 28
The Birmingham Barons return to the nation’s oldest ballpark where
Willie Mays, Ted Williams, Dizzy Dean, Satchel Paige and Reggie Jackson
played. This year’s annual classic matches the Barons with the
Jacksonville Suns. The Barons moved from Rickwood to Hoover 20 years
ago. Game at 12:35 p.m.
